West Virginia University's Welcome Week is undergoing a transformation, bidding farewell to the traditional FallFest in favor of a more diverse and engaging lineup of events. This shift, according to WVU Vice President of Student Life Gary Furbee, is a strategic move to enhance the overall experience for freshmen, offering a more comprehensive introduction to campus life and the surrounding city of Morgantown.
The new signature event, Mountaineer Midway and a Movie, takes place on the lawn of the Life Sciences Building on Monday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. It features a Ferris Wheel, carnival games, food trucks, souvenirs, and a showing of the movie Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling. The event will be capped off with a movie screening, creating a more low-key atmosphere compared to the past.
Furbee highlights the challenges of securing national headlining acts for FallFest, citing the difficulty in finding up-and-coming artists who have universal appeal and are in the early stages of their careers. Social media's rapid influence on the music industry has made it harder for these artists to maintain their emerging status.
In lieu of the traditional concert, WVU is focusing on a variety of activities throughout the week, including Midnight Mountaineer at the Student Rec Center, Student Organization Fair, WVUp All Night, and Sunday Night Lights. WVUp All Night, a student favorite, returns to the Mountainlair on Saturday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., offering inflatable obstacle courses, bowling, billiards, game shows, bingo, trivia, and laser tag.
Sunday Night Lights, a beloved tradition, sees the class of 2030 step onto Mountaineer Field for their class picture. This event fosters a sense of community and bonding among freshmen, marking a significant milestone in their college journey.
The changes in Welcome Week reflect a broader trend in higher education, where institutions are reevaluating traditional events to create more inclusive and engaging experiences for students.
